Our group has been reading Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. So far, I really like this book. It is something very original that I have never heard of before and I like that. I am excited to see where this book leads to. I like the kindness of the boy Rufus and the strong-willed nature of Dana. I like where this book is set for when she time travels. I like the Pre-Civil war times because of the social classes and how people in those times saw life. One of the interesting things that have come up is the possibility that Dana is connected to this boy because she might be one of his descendants. Something that I am confused on is why she only time travels to save the boy’s life. I think I am getting close to figuring out why, but as for now I don’t know why. I am really interested in seeing how this book continues. In our group, I would like to discuss the connection between Rufus and Dana and what that could possibly be. I would also like to discuss how her time traveling might affect her marriage and how she sees the life she lives back at home and how it might change her views on her family history. I am eager to move on with this book and find out more about Dana and Rufus.
Kirra I totally agree lizzie I think that this book gets you hooked right away. I and heartbroken to see where her marriage is heading. Her husband is not very “understanding” at all. He is threatening to take her to the hospital. He could have some sort of faith in his wife you would think; and her view on life I think only gets better.
I totally agree with both of you. I understand that it is hard to believe that your wife time travels. I think if we time traveled our loved ones reactions would be the same as Kevin's. But what is hard for Dana is that he doesn't even give her false hope of everything to be normal, her thinks she is crazy or something. It is weird that she only goes back to save Rufus, I wish they would just tell us already why she is doing with.
I like how this book is set in the Pre-Civil war times too and I agree that back then they saw life way differently. I'm so frustrated with Kevin and how he's treating Dana as if she lost her mind even though he saw, with his own eyes, that she vanished. I have a feeling that they're going to split up and I hope we find out soon why Dana only travels back when Rufus is in danger.
Our group is reading Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. This book started off with a bang, it spent no time leading up to her first adventure. The book really gets you engrossed right from the start, like no other book that I have read before. Every chapter leads you to a new adventure with her and, it leads you back to one boy that is starting to really turn into something that clears up the muddy water that was created by the start of the book. One of the most interesting things that have come up so far is that the boy that she goes and sees can hear and see something from her world, which she cannot see anything form his until she is actually there, and she never fully knows why she is really there. The one thing that always comes to my mind is why? Why is she there? What is her purpose in saving this boy? These things are what confuse me. What are my group member’s views on the book so far and what confuses them, and do we have some of the same view on what is going on in the book so far. What are your thoughts on what is going on in the book? What do you think is going to go on? Do you think she is ever going to find out why she time travels, or is she just going to have to keep saving tis boy from his dissensions in his life?
Kirra I really like this book because of how quickly it starts off. Literally right away she is sprang into action. Each chapter doesn’t have a boring start, its always getting better and better! Now you and I both know that she is going back in time to save this boy Refuse’s life. He has a purpose that for some reason she is taken back in time to help him fulfill. I do think that she is going to find out why she has to time travel. I really like this book!
I think she is going to eventually find out why she time travels just for this bout. I think her purpose of going to help the boy is to help her family legacy continue on and to help make Rufus a better person by giving him a view on life and others around him
Well, I think Rufus and Dana are connected somehow and in the beginning of the book Dana says something about him being her ancestor. I don't get how they can possibly be related but i'm sure we'll figure it out soon. I feel like Dana is like his guardian angel and he calls to her when ever he gets into trouble. I really like this book so far.
So Iposted this on time, it showed the post but it is for some reason not showing up hopefully this one works!
The book kindred by Octavia E. Butler, is fantastic. I honestly can say it is probably one of the best books I have read in a long time. It instantly starts off with an adventure. It isn’t one of those books that take a lifetime to get to the good part it just starts off with a bang. You are instantly sucked into the book; you just don’t want to set it down. Kindred is sent back to the pre- civil war times where she is supposed to help save this boy’s life. Kindred is first staged at a river. Confused and dazed she doesn’t know what to do but feels the hint to instantly save this boy in the river becuase of her good nauture. The book continues to flip back and forth beteen times. I think that it is a fun book and is bound to get even better. But it is also confusing. But I'm looking foward to the reading more!
This book is for people that hate waiting for the plot to start even though you really don't know why you get sucked into the action. It's a different book by far then what we are normally reading. It does have its confusing parts at times but then something that kinda explains it follows it.
Kirra Assignment#2 “The boy already knew more about revenge than I did. What kind of man was he going to grow up into?” This quote gives a lot of information is just one sentence. Rufus only knows more about revenge because of being beaten by his father only because he stole one dollar. Dana was really surprised by the retaliation of where she comes from where children are hardly ever spanked. Because of the time travel she isn’t used to seeing a child get whipped. Just to get back at his father Rufus set fire the draperies. This is why Dana says that she knew more about revenge than she did. This was a huge shock to her. She has not gotten used to hoe the pre-civil war time works. With how bloody and gory it is compared to her time. This quote basically tells why Rufus is being rescued by Dana. It is because Rufus comes from a violent world, and he is being raised and neglected to be a violent master. Although he is still a child. Dana is sent back in time to stop this from happening and to help Rufus get out of there alive.
"In the tub, I sat for a long while without moving, without thinking, listening for with I knew I would not hear elsewhere in the house. The pain was a friend. Pain had never been friend to me before, but not it kept me sane." This quote is said from the mouth of Dana. In my mind, this is a real turning point for her character. I think she is finally realizing what it was like to be a black woman back in those times. She has the same feelings and emotions that those peoples did and is used to it now. In her mind, she spends more time there than in her reality, so this place is becoming her new reality. I think she is starting to believe that she is a slave and there is nothing he can do about it. I think she feels like she is losing who she was in the 1970s and is starting to become a black woman of the 1800s.
Assignment #2 Madison Hamilton “ . . . most of the people around Rufus know more about real violence than the screenwriters of today ever will.” I chose this quote because it really shows how the times have changed through the years. With all that has happened with Dana and now with Kevin they both realize that their lives are way better off than Rufus. This quote shows that back then you really had to watch your back because even your own family could turn on you. I hope that Dana and Kevin can help Rufus see that he needs to not depend on them to come and save him every time he is going to get into trouble or hurt himself. In today’s world people don’t ever really think about the past and how hard they really had it. Yes, we do read or learn about it in history class but we really don’t get the feel of it. We as the people of today we need to look back and be thankful for what we have, and really show appreciation to those people. I hope that everything turns out good for all of them.
I’m reading Kindred by Octavia E. Butler and so far it’s really good. I like how it immediately starts with Dana traveling back to 1815 to save Rufus Weylin from drowning in the river. It was confusing at first to understand because when Dana first traveled back she was gone for hours but when she came back Kevin told her she was only gone for a couple seconds. Kevin is annoying because he thinks she’s crazy after she comes back and tells him everything that happened. He made her feel stupid and didn’t believe Dana even though he saw her disappear. The second time Dana travels back to Rufus he sets fire to his curtains and she throws them out the window and she figures out that Rufus is her ancestor and that he hears her coming before she travels to save him. I’m looking forward to reading more of the book and finding out more about Rufus and Dana. I predict that Dana will begin to stay longer in the past every time that she travels back. I also, think that Kevin will leave Dana because he thinks she’s crazy and she will have nobody to come home to.
Gabrielle Ciobanasiu Assignment #2 “I was beginning to realize that he loved the woman - to her misfortune. There was no shame in raping a black woman, but there could be shame in loving one.”(page.124) Dana said this after she traveled to the past and finds out that Rufus has raped Alice and tried to kill her husband Isaac. From this moment on in the book Dana begins to realize how similar Rufus and his father are. This quote is important because the rest of the book is pretty much about Alice and Rufus and the effects of their relationship. Back in the 1800's raping a black slave was no big deal but falling in love with one was not something to tell everyone about. Rufus is in love with Alice, but of course she hates him for raping her and leaving her husband for dead. Rufus takes whatever he wants and doesn't care who he might be hurting and Alice is very Brave for speaking her mind even though she knows Rufus could force her to do what he wants. What do you think will happen between Rufus and Alice? Do you think Alice will ever forgive him?
Assignment #3 The book, Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, is a very engrossing book. It has time travel, violence, and personal, emotional turmoil. All aspects of great book that would be pleasing to an avid, or even a non-avid, reader. This book is about a woman named Dana who time travels a hundred years in the past to help a young boy. She doesn’t know why she is time traveling but there is nothing she can do to stop it. She goes back in time, many times, and each time she does, she comes in closer and closer contact with danger and almost loses her life on multiple occasions. She has to deal with her real life in the 1970s and her time traveling life in the 1800s and find the difference between the two. She becomes more involved in the time traveling life, which gets her into some serious trouble. I believe that everyone should read this book. It gives you an idea of what it was really like back in those times and you get attached to the characters almost as soon as they are introduced. The author’s way of using rise and fall in the plot was very deliberate, and I liked that. The way she used characters to be the leaders of the plot was very interesting and refreshing. When you read this book you feel like you are inside the story and you are a character. Personally, I am not an avid reader and this book had me wanting to stay up late at night just to finish the chapter. I have never been so engrossed in a book, as to where I never wanted to put it down. There is no book like it, and I would highly suggest going to your nearest book store and picking this on up.
Gabrielle, I completely agree with you that every should go get this book.It teaches you about how life was in the 1800's during the times of slavery and how people lived. I really loved how the author interpreted time travel, and didn't just set the whole book in the 1800's. While reading this book I got to know the characters very well, unlike in some books where characters come and go and you dont get enough information about them.
Assignment #4 I believe banning a book in a public library is not applicable by the government. I believe that the choice not have a book banned should be made in the home, not in a congressional arena. I book should be aloud or not aloud based on their \own personal wants and beliefs. One parent may say its okay to read a book; another may find it appalling that a child would even want to read such a thing. It should not be in the government’s control to tell us what we can and cannot read in our free time. It is our free time, not theirs. A child’s role is very strong when it comes to the government making a call on whether or not to ban a book from a school library. It is their library after all. They will be the ones reading the books. Out of everyone, it affects them the most, which should give them a bigger voice. If someone wanted to ban a book in the Centennial High School library I would ask them why and be very rational about the situation. I would read the book for myself and if what they are saying is even accurate.
Gabrielle Assignment #3 Kindred by Octavia E. Butler is a 1979 novel that begins very quickly. One minute Dana and her husband Kevin are stacking books on shelves and the next moment Dana disappears and finds her self in the 1800’s. She comes to save a boy, named Rufus Weylin, from drowning in a river and later finds that the only way she can travel back home is if her life is in danger. As the book progresses, Dana begins to stay in the 1800’s for longer periods of times each time she travels back to save Rufus from danger and she also figures out why she has to protect him from dying. Personally, I really enjoyed reading this book. It has a lot of twists and turns that made it hard for me to put the book down. I love how it was set in the 1800’s when African Americans were slaves because Dana experienced what it was like to be a slave. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who likes adventure and an easy read. There is some offensive language also. There is a lot that happens in this book such as, rape, whippings, slave trade, and time travel. It’s a very intense book that keeps you reading for hours and you get to know the characters very well. I think the reason this book was banned was because it says the word “nigger” a lot.
The book Kindred by Olivia E. Butler is based about a black woman named Dana living in the 1970’s and goes back to per civil war times. At first she doesn’t know why she goes back in time but, she soon finds out about how her family and the struggles they had to face in pre civil war times. This book is an awesome read, if you don’t like slow books then this is the book for you. This book seems like a movie in your head that is how fast the action starts. This book really doesn’t have a dull moment. This book makes me want to read it; it is easy to read this book in one or two days. I’m the type of person that doesn’t like waiting to see what happens and this book kept me engaged. I would recommend this book to multiple people; it shows how easy we have it in the year 2013. Even though she lives in the 1970 there is still contrivers over the black community, and this book shows what these people had to deal with on a day to day basics.
The book Kindred by Octavia E. Butler is a book that gets you hooked on it right away. Most books take a few chapters to really get into it, but not this one. This book first takes place in the 1970s but later goes to pre-civil war time when Dana is moving into a home in California; while she is in her living room she is instantly taken back into pre-civil war time. She is confused and unsure of what happened to her at first, but she soon finds out that she is being sent back in time to help her families past, by clearing up actions that made situations uncomfortable and that created a bad reputation for her family. I think that this book has a unique style and isn’t like a lot of other books because it is instantly taking you into the world of Dana. The book made me feel like as if I was in it. I don’t feel like this book had one boring part after another it just gets better and better with each page you read. I would read this book over and over again. If anything I think that this book is one of the best I have ever read. I would recommend this book to someone who loves a good mystery and isn’t disturbed easily because of violence, or discrimination against race. This is a really good book and if you are even a little interested, get on it and start reading.
Assignment #4 I think that having books banned from libraries is taking our rights away from the first amendment. We as teens watch and play and watch many violent video games or TV and because adult authority believes that a book should be banned because they believe that it is not appropriate enough for us to read is not fair. I think that if teens want to read a book that has violence or sexual references if plot in it, it’s better than watching it. I think that books exercise our minds and if we can’t read a book because an adult doesn’t think that it is appropriate enough that that is totally wrong. Books are a way for people to escape and just relax and read what they want. I don’t think that adults should be able to control what we read. If we want to read a certain book that has violence in it, we should be aloud to. When adults put more restrictions on a lot of things let alone a book, students or people in general tend to break those rules, and just do it anyway. Students are going to read what they want somehow they will get their hand on that one book that adults think shouldn’t be banned. So what’s the point? I think that banning books a waist of time, teens are going to get their hands on them one way or another.

ReplyDeleteThe book Kindred by Octavia E.
Assignment #4
ReplyDeleteI think that having books banned from libraries is taking our rights away from the first amendment.
