The title of the book "Rats Saw God" by Rob Thomas and it is a very interesting book. The main character Steve York, who is in Wakefield High School and has 4.0 GPA, he enjoys his life and friends he could trust. Now that he has bad grades at his school because of lack motivation and he fails his Class. His parents were divorced ,and he’s living with his dad (the astronaut) in Houston, Texas. His younger sister Sarah, she moved with her mom to somewhere in California to get away from her husband Alan York. Steve don’t like his father because he don’t support his son. I was confused that Steve has 760 verbal on his SAT, but he failed in English. His English teacher offer him to write one hundred pages about the novel in order to graduate in high school. She said rather do during summer, but he has a choice to catch up his grades and credits. Steve is a decent person that his life was miserable. I want to read more to find out what happens with Steve in the next chapter.

    1. Yeah I agree with you. This was I was talking about when we had our decision in our group. Nothing was wrong in his life; I mean he had friends, great in school, and anything he could ask for. Why would he end up doing stuff like that? Is it because he wanted to fit in because he moved school and no one else to support him since his dad is away a lot?

I thought it was his counselor who was helping him out? Well your right it was an exciting book but at times id get bored because of some of the big vocabulary. But other than that is a nice book I also agree Eric. Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't it his father who wanted him to get in to sports and all those other activities? I feel a little confused about that.

So far I’ve have like the book, easy to read, simple words that could be understood, and what to know about other person’s perspective about high school. It gets interesting the more I have read it. You can actually figure out when he’s writing to on his English paper and when he’s talking to himself or whatever that happen that day. It helps to go into more detail before you read his journal. In the beginning I didn’t enjoy much because it was pretty boring. Some of it doesn’t make since cause it goes back and forth from his high school years so it’s hard to remember some of the things. A part I didn’t understand was that when whenever they’re the word God he would uppercase it, was that a symbolism? Also why is a guy like him doing well in school and then getting involved with these kinds of things? I mean usually from my point of view only drugs are involved with someone is that they are social problems and they lead it to drugs. In the beginning of the book it didn’t seem like he was having problem with his parents other than them beginning separated and his dad was an astronaut.

  4. As I read The Rats Saw God I thought it was going to be a great book. Not only for the “Puff…puff…pass” located on the back of the book. I chose this book because I thought I could relate to it; I tend to be more interested if I can relate. But as I read I learned that it is very hard text because I come across some words I never heard or seen. Even though it’s a hard text I am still able to understand it quite well. Witch I like because at times it can be a really great book. It’s interesting how he talks about his life as he writes because it sounds like he has many problems but he is always willing to over come, but a question I ask my self is why is the relationship between Steve and his father so awkward and heartless? When it sounds like his father wants nothing but the best for him. His father had money and his mother did not, why did he choose to be with his mother? I think he has a lot of sentimental value towards his mother

That‘s a good question, I don’t understand between Steve and his father. His father don’t treat Steve very well and he’s losing his motivation. Steve rather than living with his mom and his sister because he doesn’t like his father. Also he has money and was being selfish to himself because he buys something for him, but not for Steve. Steve has no choice to live with, but he could just live with his father that has money.

“I got my third letter from Doug today. If I don’t start writing back I’m sure I’ll lose all contact with Texas. That might not be a bad thing. I’m always afraid to open his letters for fear I will learn fresh details of her life. I guess that since I’ve been writing for DeMouy, and I’ve had to type her name regularly, I’ve grown a bit more accustomed to it. But all my information is old. I don’t want to know what she’s up to now, unless maybe it’s something tragic.” (Thomas 65).
I chose this quote by Steven about his friend Doug sent him his third letter because he was afraid to open his letter. It shows how Steve and Doug are being friendly that will lead them to comprehend his life. Also it’s important that he can’t loose his friend in Texas because he’s important to Steve. Steve has a lot of his friends in Texas; he has no friends in California. As far as I can tell this book was challenged, and banned due to Violence, strong language and drug reference. Steve is a person that he involves with problems of his life because he’s losing his motivation of school. I wouldn’t recommend it to the reader of the book because once you read it and it talks about his past; it gets really boring to understand of his stories.

“I got my third letter from Doug today. If I don’t start writing back I’m sure ill lose all contact it Texas.”(Page 65). I feel like Steve is losing a lot of motivation because he is not writing back to Doug. Doug always writes Steve to let him know how he’s doing in college, but Steve doesn’t even bother to write back. Sometimes I feel like Steve is selfish and only worries about himself because he sounds like he’s losing motivation. Why should he be afraid to open his best friend’s letters? Steve sounds like he doesn’t have such a great life because he so full of negativity but as he writes about his life at the beginning it sounds bad, then great, then down hill. I feel like he needs counseling.

In the book “Rats Saw God” by Rob Thomas, there’s a boy name Steve York who had 4.0 GPA at school, but now he was doing bad at school because of his lack motivation and fail classes. His counselor offers him to write 100 pages of essay to graduate high school, but he has no choice that he wants to graduate or not. He has no value of his life which is his family, school and friends. Steve involves with social and family; his life was irritating. His parents were divorced Steve stay with his dad which is he calls him “The Astronaut” and his sister Sarah stay with her mom and they moved far away somewhere in California. Steve wrote his essay about his past instead of writing a novel. Steve and his dad moved Texas, and California back and forth because Steve likes to stay in California which is his mother and sister lives there. Steve don’t like his father because he treat him bad, and he doesn’t care about him. I don’t understand why his father don’t care about Steve, but he should be care and support him to do well at school. Did his father like his son or not? And it doesn’t tell any background of the characters. Due to Steve, he hangout with his girlfriend Dub, and they get along with each other. At the end, Steve called Sarah that where their dad at. She said that dad wasn’t home at work. Then, Steve said he made and tell his dad that he’s safe and sound. Overall, it is a good book, but it gets boring that it talks about his past that involves with him. It was interesting of the book, but I expected to know what happen from the past.

    1. I think Steves son liked his son. I mean would he talk to his son if he didn't like him? Even though, his father didn't make it to his graduation. I understand where you're coming from because what kind of father doesn't show up to their own sons graduation.

The book of “Rats Saw Gods” which took place in a high school student named Steve York. During his senior year he started getting involved in drugs and things in that sort, so his counselor assigned him an assignment of a 100 pages essay for him to be able to graduate. Throughout the book it’s basically a diary of Steve and what happens during those years that he had. What I think of the book was pretty off and on because the story was boring but also interesting at some points. It wasn’t interesting because it was talking a lot of what he goes through with his family, school, and relationships which I could have connections with so that it wasn’t interesting with me. The parts that interested me was the parts he dealt with the drugs and sexual activity because it was to know how a person with that kind of life works out, yet it was weird how he would describe some of the things that he went through during the sexual activity that he has with his girlfriend Dub. When Rob Thomas publicized this book was in 1996 and this was his first book that he wrote. He received the golden satellite awards which is a award given out every year for a journal or a blog. I would recommend this book for people who like to read journals about people life. Even though, this book was a banned book it wasn’t that bad because it didn’t many things in that content, so I actually wouldn’t even think putting this book into recommend this as a banned book.

By reading a banned book, people like to read books that are drama and action. I don’t know why they banned Rats Saw God. It probably has mild violence and sexual. But it is not acceptable to banned the book; it is a good book. When student tell another student that what book should they read, but there’s no good books to read. If a students have a negative comment about the book that is banned from Centennial High School library, I would persuade and propose them why they want to banned the book? I just tell them what’s so good about the book and give point of view and explain to them. I wouldn't recommend the book to the students because once they read half page of a book, they’ll end up not to read the book. Everywhere is censorship to school, home and other places because you must have good choice to depends on you.

Is it okay for censorship everywhere in the world? People would restrict or sensor something of event that happen causing to someone death and they want justice, so they resolve to banned something. I can understand that some things should be and shouldn’t be restricted. But then when it comes to books why is it a bad thing? When is going to be the conflict of someone reading these banned books. How is it different from watching a rated R movie and reading a book that maybe have drugs or sexually activity in it? For a book to be banned in high school where students become mature and should be able read these kind of content. They would face it when they are out of school so what the harm of it in schools? I’m not sure if students should be in charge of banned books but a mix group of adults and students to be able to decide if that book should be banned. Reading is a resource where we learn new knowledge so how are we supposed to learn any of this if all the things that are bad going to be tough to the future generation.
