Last week our group began reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The book is told by Amir point of view. Only 243 pages in to the book and I really do enjoy the book. What I liked about it was that it takes place in a diffident country and a diffident time period. What is interesting about it is during the time period that Russia was trying to taking over Afghanistan Amir was writing what was happen around him it was so interesting that he was writing it down. So what I was confused about was on page 11 and it said “On a high mountain I stood, and cried the name of Ali, lion of God. O Ali, Lion of god, king of Men, Bring joy to our sorrowful hearts.” What was Khaled trying to say about this quote because I am so lost by it? What I want to discuss is what there so many Afghanistan word in this dang book and we and ever pronouns the words. The questions I have are. Why this book is banned? And why is it name the Kite Runner? and what was behind the title? Why was it during the Russia invasion of Afghanistan in the 1975?
That quote is a part of the religion the Hazara'a follow. Ali is one of the names of the prophets so they pass down the name to their own members of their family. They look up to that name, also there are so many Afghan words because this book was written in Afghanistan by an Afghan man. It is called Kite runner because of what the only hobby they allowed in Afghanistan before the Russians invaded was Kite flying. It will make more sense at the end of the book.
Assignment #2, April Perry The book was banned because of the rape of Hassan, and the Title is explained by the story. There was a huge thing going on where they cut eachothers kites and the last one standing wins, and the reason the book was banned because of the insident after the kite was ran. Leading to the title " The Kite Runner ". The story consistanly leads some how back to Hassan and there realtionship and what they'd went threw or stuff they'd expereniced together.
-Munir -Assignment #1 “The Kite Runner,” by Khaled Hosseini is a very interesting book so far. It keeps me entertained and the events move in a fast pace so I don’t get bored of it. What I like about this book is that it relates to my family’s background so I can relate to it, the way that Amir and his family had to leave Afghanistan when the Russians invaded; my parents had to do the same. What I find most interesting about this book is that Amirs best friend Hossein is also his servant. The amount much they have in common and the way they connect has something interesting about it. What I am confused about is why Amir didn’t want to be seen with Hossein anymore after some Pashtuns beat Hossein for being a Hazara. It shouldn’t matter what race he is to Amir, it’s still the same person. I want to discuss the big changing point when Amir hides his own watch in Hosseins room and accuses him of stealing it which causes Hossein to leave. Where is Amir and his family going to run away to? Are they going to be back to their hometown? Most importantly, is Amir ever going to be together with Hossein again?
Ivan Kalachik Assignmemt #2 Yo Dog when you said "I want to discuss the big changing point when Amir hides his own watch in Hosseins room and accuses him of stealing it which causes Hossein to leave." Where did Hossein leave? What is a Hazara? What did Amir do, for Hossein to stand up for Amir?
Assignment #2, April Perry Amir was too scared to admit to what he'd saw, so he KNEW there was another choice instead of setting Hassan up, but he didn't want to admit to what he'd seen. He didn't want every one to have to know he was hte one too scared to stand up for a friend, someone who was like a brother. That would ahve only been a dissapointment to his father in that case, because he was a well known man who would do almost anything for a respectable person in need.
The Kite Runner takes place in Kabul, Afghanistan; keeping you fascinated by there culture and interested by the dedication of some, and the let downs of others. The main character of the story is Amir, whose best friend is Hassan, who also happens to be his servant. However, after a big town kite race everything changed between them. The change wasn’t an accident, but more of a selfish mistake. Once Amir won the race Hassan went to go run the last flag Amir had cut down for him (you cut each others flags and the last flag standing wins). Once Hassan had found the flag he’d been surrounded by the Wali, Kamal, and Assef the same boys that had picked on them once before, but Hassan had stood up for Amir. The tables turned and Hassan had gotten surrounded, and Amir had the choice to help, or hide, he knew what he was SUPPOSED to do, but did he care enough to actually say anything, or make an effort? No. He ran away. Everything changed after that, he felt a coward. Amir was nothing like his father or how he thought he was “supposed “to be, his father a brave man, him not. Hassan and Amir grew apart do to the incident in the alley, and he was okay with that, sadly. It’s sad to me that Hassan cares SO much about him, when he gets little to nothing in return. Friendship, yes, but the respect to at least maybe continue to be in his life, make an effort, anything? He didn’t get a thing; he got pushed away and set up. Even when Amir set Hassan up, he STILL continued to show his respect and lied to Baba ( Amir’s father ) and say he stole the stuff when he never did such a thing, but it was when that happened that Hassan knew it all, he knew he saw what happened and he accepted it, still loved for Amir, but it’s sad he was never given the respect he deserved, well form Amir that is. I’m confused as to of WHY he is such a coward, especially to the people who he should care and protect and have done nothing but been there for him in life? Why would you let anyone like that go, ever?
Munir Abdul Assignment #2 Amir is a pashtun and the city where they live was found by the pashtuns. Hassan and his family are Hazara's, most pashtuns dont see them as humans. They hate the fact that the Hazara's are living in their territory. Amir did not want to be seen as a betrayer if he helped out Hassan, even though he should have as a good friend.
Munir Assignment #2 “I lifted Hassan’s mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghani bills under it”- Page 104. I chose this quote because of the big changing point it caused. Amir lied to his dad and caused his only true friend to leave. Hassan made a sacrifice and instead of telling the truth, he said that he stole it. Hassan and his dad, Ali, decided to leave even though Amir’s dad did not allow. They were his best and closest servants. This quote itself broke a big friendship and plays a big role in the theme of the book, friendship. Amir finds out towards the end that Hassan wasn’t just his servant. He was his brother. Lying about his watch being stolen was the only reason Amir never got to be with his own brother. Never found out, it was the biggest regret he had to live with. Amir is now going to an orphanage where Hassan’s child is supposed to be. These kinds of regrets happen all the time and we can all connect to it somehow. We have all lost a friend or not as close to anymore. This is also a great example of why we should treasure the ones close to us and not take them for granted.
"For you a thousand times over." Page #67. I picked this quote because it really does mean/prove a lot about Hassan an his commitment, and respect he had for Amir, not only because he felt he had to, but because he wanted to. He loved him like a brother, he looked up to him. This was his way of saying he'd do anything for him, anything possible for his happiness even though Hassan got little to no credit for anything, he didn't care about him, he cared about Amir. I picked this quote because i like how he is so selfless, he cares for not only Amir but everyone. He puts others before himself a lot of of the time which i find is a good quality to a certain point. However, i dont think this explains much of the book. It does kind of end up meaning more when you get further into the story, but at the beginning you might just take it as Hassan teasing or just saying it to be nice, but hes not, he means it.
Kaylee Assignment 1 In Kite Runner by, Khaled Hosseini is about a boy named Amir and his friend Hossein; Hossein is Amir’s servant and his friend. The book takes place in Afghanistan while they’re at war with Russia. I wouldn’t pick this as my first choice for a reading, but its okay so far. I haven’t read very far yet, so I’m hoping it gets better. The part I do like about this book though is how intriguing it is. One thing that is interesting to me about the book is it keeps my attention by how much imagery the author uses, and also the word choice he uses. Another thing is how Amir and his friend Hossein both lost their mothers at such a young age. Amir lost his mother at birth; she had given birth to him, but died after that. Hossein lost his mother when he was a little boy, she decided to run off with a band, and leave her family behind. In the first discussion I want to hear how the other people in my group feel about how the book is so far. In future discussions I might ask how the book got the name “Kite Runner”.
I personally don’t think in high school there should ever be books banned. We are introduced so much not only because who we grow up around, but also the environment that we are in. Its not really like anyone can really change it with a snap of fingers, eventually society will see that it isn’t doing to well, and then try to do something to fix its self, but it wont be able to happen quick. I think as a High school, or even kids are always underestimated of there thought process, or the way they interpret or perceive information. There’s worse things that should be taken care of, or looked at besides finding books to ban, if you don’t agree with its contents then don’t read it, or just choose not to hear about it. I mean its not like books are shown on tv to often, you’d just have to step into a book store, or hear about it from peers. However, the parent/teachers/groups that want the books banned make extremely valid points, but I feel like if they feel so strongly about that then they should just teach or tell there kids not to read the book, because its being made a bigger deal then it needs to be. I almost feel like some of the books that were banned are almost more popular because of the incident. If someone wanted to ban a book at my school I honestly don’t think I’d have much to say to them besides why? Like why do you care so much about what other people want to read/ express to others? It just bugs me to think there are so many talented authors and people that are amazing with there words, and they get nothing but crap. It will be there problem if there book doesn’t sell by its self. Also, if they care so much about banding books why they don’t try to stop them before they are published, and try to get the book changed, I personally just find it annoying. HOWEVER, there are exceptions to oh when banning a book might be made necessary, like if there is a brutal rape of a man or woman, but at the same time the book should probably be stopped before it is published, or a guess or a planned murder of someone else, and in some way might harm someone else in the future. I also think that with the sharing of personal or private information banning should then also be permitted.
The Kite Runner is a told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Raised in the same household and sharing everything from as long as they could remember. Nonetheless the two boys were meant to grow up in two different life styles they are combined as one. There was not only guilty pleasure that kept them close, but the trust and respect of each other. The book drew me in quick, and I felt like I could easily connect with the characters, not because I have experienced anything even remotely close to that, but because it was just so detailed. You feel like you know every thought, and even if you have an idea about what is going to happen next, and you feel like your probably right your still craving for more and more, you think one thing and another thing happens. It made me really upset though reading about Hassan, he is made up to be such respectful and genially just amazing friend to have and someone who you’d want in your life forever, and he honestly opens your eyes. He was never going to hurt or disrespect Amir, even when he no longer had to make food or cleaning or do anything for him he still continued to show him nothing but respect, regardless if Hassan knew that Amir saw “what happened”, and knew “what happened” to him, he didn’t blame him, he never even questioned him. He loved him, and wanted nothing more than to have Amir a part of his life, his acceptance. The author of the Kite Runner was Khaled Hosseini whom was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1965. While Khaled Hosseini was studying in medical, Hosseini began writing his first novel The Kite Runner, in March of 2001. In 2003, The Kite Runner was published and became the bestseller in about 70 countries.
Munir Abdul Assignment #3 My group and I read The Kite Runner, and amazing book by Khaled Hosseini. The main character, Amir explains his life growing up in Afghanistan. His best friend, Hassan, which was also his servant grew up with him but had to leave through some regretful mistakes that Amir made. Afghanistan was soon invaded by Russians so Amir and his family left to California, America just for Amir to have a bright future. Amir’s dad died of cancer and Amir decided to go back to his hometown and visit an old friend of his dad. Amir finds out that Hassan was killed and decided to take his son back to America and take care of him. The book ends with the hard truth that Hassan who was disguised as Amir’s servant was actually his brother. I really enjoyed the ending, really made the whole book what it is today. It showed the importance of friendship and to realize what we have before it’s no longer there. What I didn’t like about the book is the part where Amir leaves his best friend to get beat up and raped because he didn’t want to be seen with a Hazara. My favorite character was Hassan because of his humble and caring personality. Towards the end, Amir realized what he did and really regretted it but it was too late and it made no difference. At the start my impressions of the book weren’t so good, I wasn’t enjoying as much as I was towards the end. The plot really changed and it became more interesting to see what happens next. I would recommend this book to anyone who want to read an emotional and mood changing book about the importance of friendship and modern day Afghanistan.
Munir Abdul Assignment #4 Millions of books are banned every year because of a little part in the book that catches the eyes of a parent or school board that is thought to be inappropriate. I do not think any book should be banned out of a high school’s library no matter what the inappropriate part is. By the time the kids in this generation are in high school, they already know all about rape, sex, cuss words, etc. I don’t think they should ban a book that has a lot of meaning and thought put into it because of a little part that has un-allowed actions. If a parent has a problem with their children reading a certain book then just have the student read another book instead of having it banned for the whole school. What I don’t understand is why the authors of the books just don’t remove that little part and the book will still be as good as it was. My book, the Kite Runner was banned because of a rape scene which did not even go into detail in the book.
