Andrew Ortega Assignment #1 Early in the book "The Absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian," Junior makes it easy for the readers to get a good grasp on what he looks like, how he acts, and how he was raised.
One of the parts that stood out to me was when Junior is talking about his last moment with his dog and when his dad takes his dog outside and shoots him in order to take it out of its misery. This moment was very sad and made me feel a bit angry knowing that if my pet was going through problems; my family would do whatever we can in order to save him or her so why didn't they do it, even if they would have to pay later.
Another thing I took note of is the fact that a lot of the Indian description he gives is very stereotypical such as gambling or the hard drinking Indians do.
So far I'm enjoying the book and I am waiting to see where the plot picks up.
I also found that when Junior was spending his last moments with his dog a very sad moment. But you do have to take in consideration that their family is very poor and couldn't afford to pay to take it to the vet. I think it was in the best interest of the dog to be let down.
Man that part was sad I would be angry at my dad for killing me dog specially if I was attached to it even calling it my best friend like he did, than again the dog was already suffering would’ve it been better to have him still alive and suffering or kill it like the dad did to get it over with?
My personal reaction to the start of "The Absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian" was that this book was not going to grasp my attention and make me want to continue to read on. I would say this is a very easy-reader type of book. There isn’t much difficulty with grasping words and such not, but as a nonstop reader I find this book a little TO easy to read. I can almost find myself finishing it up in one day. The book itself is somewhat interesting. What I didn’t like though was the fact that the author had decided to throw in sketches, almost as if it was a comic book of some sort? I felt as if that took my attention away from the story and felt like it wasn’t necessary to have in the book. And soon just gave up and started to ignore these drawing. What I did end up liking was the concept of the story. I felt as if the author is putting out a really good feel with the character Junior’s life story. I myself can pick out many connections with this story, whether it may be text to self or text to world. Junior’s life struggle really draws out sympathy and compassion from me as I continue to read. I am though looking forward to continue reading this story.
I find that most of your reactions to the book are very similar to mine. I as well find this book to be very enjoyable as well as an easy read. I also think that the picture also take away from the book itself but at the same time I think they are nice in their own way. What was your reaction to when he punched the football player in the face? I though it was pretty funny, yet odd that the kid didn't even do anything to get even with him at all.
Andrew, I am glad that we share similar reactions towards this book. My reaction to Junior punching the football player in the face was shocking. I did not think Junior had it in him to something so courageous. And yes, I did too find it odd that the football player did nothing in return.
I honesty really like how the book is fairly easy to read. The book so far is good to me the kid seems pretty funny has me laughing through the pages. And his drawing off to the side got me a bit distracted but I thought it was pretty cool how he just drew the things out. Hey what’s your guys opinion on him moving to the other school?
The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian is a very enjoying and insightful book about a freshman’s first day at school. The twist is that Junior is an Indian from a Spokane reservation who is attending his old schools rivals the Reardan Redskins. Throughout the story Junior encounters life changing lessons as he deals with bullies, love, and friendship. The book itself is a very fast read, and by the end leaves you confused and analyzing why this book was banned. Another thing that that it leaves you thinking about is why the author ended the book the way he did. I think this book is pretty good overall and I would recommend it for anyone looking for a fast and enjoying read for the high school humor and realistic situations that are based off of the authors real life. Just because the author includes a very minuscule blurb about masturbation which got the book banned, does not mean this book is over sexual in anyway. I 100% recommend this book.
"Dude!" Roger said. "Man, don't sweat it. You should have said something earlier. I got you covered." He opened his wallet and handed me forty bucks.
I chose this quote from the book because it is just a heartfelt moment between Roger and Junior. It really shows the charter Rogers true colors how he really is a nice guy. Because if Roger really wanted to he could of made a fool of Junior. About how he was poor and showed up to dinner without any money. I think this also shows how Roger really does like Junior and has accepted him for who he is. Their friendship has grown and Junior has seen that Roger isn't that typically football playing jerk he is. With Junior’s situation with not having any money really made me be able to connect this to a time when I had a friend who was in need of some cash because they were having a hard time at the moment. So I decided to lend them some cash. And I’m glad I had because I know how much they were stressing because they were a few dollars sort for something. This passage really had no indication as to why this book was banded.
The book I been reading is “The Absolutely True diary of a Part-Time Indian” so far the book has gotten my attention and has me interested. Since the beginning the boy Junior explain how he was born, and some condition he was born with, and his family was, and where is was from and then starts talking about how he is always getting picked on. The reason it got my attention is, it talked about him coming from a poor family and him getting bullied but I also thought the way he explained the thing he was trying to say was funny it seems to him like his life is a Joke. He also talks about random thing that throw you off but makes you laugh. Than again he seems like a kid that really doesn’t care on what going on in is life he just lets it happen. He struggles but gets through it. I want to keep reading and see what else goes on in Junior’s life. My personal connection is that he draws out the things that go on in his mind. I like drawing when I want to express myself with feeling I have.
Assignment #2 “But I still want to know exactly why my sister gave up on her dream of writing romance novels. I mean, yeah, it is kind of a silly dream. What kind of Indian writes romance novels? But still it is pretty cool.”
I choose this quote because there was something about junior’s sister that he doesn’t know. What I like about this quote is that it tells you there is something you don’t know about your family and when you find out what they really do like to do it interests you. It’s important because it tell you he learns more about his sister than what he knew. This passage does not help indicate why its banned its just something that kind of stood out to me. I feel like I should find out my brother really likes enjoying I his free time and get to know him better maybe ill find out something interesting. Also get closer as in getting along more connected to what we have in common instead of getting under each other skin. Junior should really find out a bit more stuff about his sister and talk to her more and see if she will go back to writing romance novels.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a really funny good book. I liked reading it through out the book a lot of things happened to make you keep reading. I enjoyed flipping through the pages seeing what was going to happen next. The book is mainly about an Indian Junior that lives in Spokane Indian Reservation and realizes that alcohol is more important than the education. So he decides to transfer out of the Reservation High school to Reardan High which is a white school he is the only Indian there beside the mascot and he left his so called best friend rowdy behind but now rowdy is calling him a trader for not staying at rez where he belongs. He is a very smart kid but is an outcast when he is new to Reardan puts up a fight to prove to everyone is isn’t afraid of anyone. Don’t want to spoil anything so yes I do recommend this book its funny sad and fun to read. I don’t think it should be banned because it tells a good story. It does talk about disturbing things but not bad that someone wont be able to read it.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian was a very enjoyable book to read. The main charter who is an Indian from a Spokane reservation who is attending his old schools rivals the Reardan Redskins. Junior who is an upcoming freshman undergoes throughout the book a lot of heartache, bulling and love. My overall thoughts of this story were that it was a fairly decent story. Very fast paced and short. This book did bring out some compassion towards the main charter Junior. Just how his life situation was pretty bad, but he did manage to stay positive and keep going even when there was no hope. I think I would recommend this book to someone if they are looking for an easy reader/ quick book to enjoy.
