I just finished reading a book with similar themes to The Bell Jar; it was called Before I Fall. Depression can affect individuals without discriminating against age. Through chapter nine it has talked about how she is sad, but suicide hasn’t been brought up. So far I think this book should not be banned. It can be a good book to learn from, and inform students about the topic. Currently at Centennial we are in unity week, and recognize bullying as a problem. Bullying isn’t being glorified; it’s trying to be reduced. Talking about suicide won’t make students want to commit it. It’s possible the issue was already there, and discussing it could bring help to the student. Reading a personal story can help students imagine the results of hurting yourself or committing suicide more than general statistics. People try to fool others, and sometimes themselves by putting up fonts. They pretend everything is alright when it’s not. It is an important life lesson to learn that not everything is what it seems, and how to deal with metal health problems not just the physical ones. With the setting this story takes place in there isn’t much recognition to mental health problems. Now there are more options, and help for a brighter future.
Rocio Jimenez Assignment#2 part(1) I thought the samething when i started reading through out chapter 9 and i found alot of different emotions and she seems very depressed about her life. i just don't get why though? she seems to have alot opportunities coming towards her and she isn't willing to take them. In my opinion. life is hard but you have to walkaway and make yourself someone that will stand up strong and tall. Forgetting everyone and everything will be something that will make life better to live in.
Rocio Jimenez Assignment #1 My group is reading this book call the “The Bell Jar by Silvia Plath”, is very confusing at first but once you go on reading and getting to know more about what is talking about and it makes it much easier to understand. Sometimes you have to go back and re-read the chapter to be able to understand and have a clue what’s going on. The book also uses a lot of emotion and a lot of depression going on. I have gotten to chapter ten. It seems like she’s very depress in begin life and she’s thinking of suicidal thoughts. It seems weird though because she seems to have a lot of opportunities that don’t come for a lot of people. Is properly she can’t find herself in her or properly she feels capture and trapped. The reason I’m saying this it doesn’t make sense me she acts in an emotional way you will never know what’s going on with her. I don’t really know why this book is banned to be honest. Other than that, this book is really interesting and makes you want to keep reading to find out how she dies. Theirs a meaning why the book is call “The Bell Jar” you just have to keep reading.
I agree that The Bell Jar is higher level reading than some of the other books. It can get confusing, because part of it is told in flashbacks. However, towards the end there is less. It continues to be difficult if not more, because it gets some what choppy. One morning she will be doing something, then after a small break of the page she will be doing another. I wonder why Sylvia does this lack of transitions? Esther in her depression feels every moment of every minute. I feel like those breaks don’t compliment her character well.
I have read the first three chapters of the book and it was boring, to be there was to much detail and not enough introduction of the character. It was very confusing, but as I went along it became easier to understand but not fully. I had to reread a lot to understand. The main character upset me a lot of the time, she had all this going for her, friends, family, school and money and yet she was downing herself. It was pitiful. I can understand the emotional outcome and turmoil, but she acts like it is not worth it that nothing is worth it. I have it. She disgust me. I would not recommend this book if you are looking for someone who will over come the pain of depression. Because it is a disappointment.
Rocio Jimenez Assingment 2 part(1) i couldn't agree more when you said the book was really boring and confusing at first.I also had to re-read pretty much the book because it's really hard to be able to understand what Esther Greenwood has been going through.
Context: She is thinking about her dead dad. “…because if he had lived he would have been crippled and an invalid for life, and he couldn’t have stood that, he would have rather have died than that happen.” (Plath 101)
I really like this quote because it gives insight into how she was raised while her dad was living. He strove for the best, and would not be anything less. It explains why she studied so hard in school as well. It does have to do with that reasons why the book was banned. Her dad physically crippled wouldn’t have been happy, and would have committed suicide, which would have been looked down upon. This quote is a metaphor for Esther’s life. Esther just like her father is crippled, but she is crippled mentally. She too rather kill herself, than live as an invalid like her father would have. Her father had an accident that left him crippled. I can’t really pin point one exact moment that crippled Esther. It was more of a series of events. I believe Esther will get better, which fits with her father, because if her wouldn’t have been hurt so bad he would have wanted to recover. This is relevant to students in that most people have though about hat it would be like to suddenly die. What would be the consequences? Also I’m sure that some people have thought about suicide. Maybe, the thoughts were serious but teens every year do self-harm and commit suicide
Rocio Jimenez Assignment 2 part(1) this quote really did got to me because as you said that she talks about her dad and how she raised with him. made me realize that is hard to lose someone special that meant everything for you like you're own family. is like killing yourself to make you feel better or to leave everything behind and die without worrying about anything but you laying down closing you're eyes. thats just hard to imagine espicially if you're a young citizen yourself. Is just hard to imagine being in her spot.
I see, so there is a lot more to the character than what she makes it out to be. But to me that is not a reason as to why she should want to kill herself. But in those times it was different they were less excepting of certain problems when it came to the health of the mind and body. I hope that she does get better, so her father would/might be proud of her. I am glad that the has not killed herself over her mental state, yes it is painful which I can understand on her her level. But it should take a lot more than just those triggers as to want to leave this world as in invalid.
Rocio Jimenez Assignment 2 part(1) I agree with you on why she wants to kill herself if she's barely 21? life is life and everybody lifes by struggling. She just doesn't really understand that.
Rocio Jimenez Assignment #2 What Buddy’s mother always says? …” What a man wants is a mate and what a women wants is infinite security,” and, “ What a man is an arrow into the future and what a women is the place the arrow shoots off from,”. Chapter 6 pg. #58
I like this quote because it shows a relationship between female and male , also show their perspective for one another. Like, needing a man’s unconditional love and security to feel complete. The same goes for the women a man who would love to have the attention and caring love of his partner in life. I chose this quote because, I think love in a teenage life is lust and as we get more sophisticated and wiser we somehow come to the feeling of love as we age in our life’s and become more mature. This quote is important to me because, it played a big role in my life and taught me with experiences and made me wiser. Yes, this passage in the book has indicated why the book has been banned or challenged in many ways like inappropriate scene, illegal use of drugs, bad language, and making it seem like it’s alright for young teens to fall in love but truly it’s just lust. My point of views on this passage is its confusing in the beginning but as you are reading through the book you seem to figure out that you somehow have an connection with narrator. In the novel it shows that she been through hard times and that a lot of damage well be done to you from losing someone special. The connections I feel with this piece, is that in life, love comes and go, as a teen we experience so many different feeling and are not sure if it’s truly real or if we are just getting emotionally disturb. The connection goes towards mostly every teenager because they mostly go through the same situations. That’s why I think this book shouldn’t be banned but somehow making it be challenged only made it better…
The book “The Bell Jar” by Sylvia Plath is about this twentieth year’s old name Esther Greenwood. As you read more, you start realizing theirs a lot of the depression going on towards chapters 8 through 11. You’ll be amaze and so interested in reading this story. Esther Greenwood had so many opportunities coming toward her. She got hired to become an editor in a magazine. While she works there, she meets new people that will change her life. She tries to keep herself positive towards other people. There’s more to Esther Greenwood to even notice, you just have to read more to realize her life wasn’t perfect or the best. Her Father’s death devastated her and without her mother being able to be able for her all this years. I kind of get where she’s coming from but there’s no reason to hold a grudge and be depress. Life is life and there’s so much to it. You just have been able to push away the people that hurt you and move on to continue life as it is. My experience in reading this book is I thought the ending was going to be more exciting and breath taking like other stories but it was like “oh that happened “that kind of question. This book really didn’t get any of my attention. First two chapters are hard to understand because Sylvia Plath likes to jump off and talk about something so different it makes it hard to understand. Overall this book is interesting by how someone life style and the experience people go through daily basis. I don’t recommend this book to people that can’t connect to it or doesn’t have any life experiences towards suicidal thoughts. Is not a bad book but is really hard to get in the beginning but then once you start getting to chapters 15 and 17. You’ll be engage in reading more and more towards the ending because it starts getting interesting. Esther Greenwood realizes in the end that life was a choice and a mistake in being able to live in. The writer for this book is Sylvia Plath. She was born in October 27, 1932 and died in February 11, 1963. She started writing in such a young age and started writing poetry. She wrote poems through her life and starting reading books as her process of writing poetry made her write about her life style and how her death was never solved. It was a mystery to be able to find because no one knew about her death till see went missing. Once you start reading her poems and books. They might be a difficult to understand but you’ll realize were she’s coming from. Is crazy to know Sylvia Plath writes about her life style in her books and poems. This book made realize a lot like appreciate all the opportunities you’re giving and don’t take an advantage of it cause you’ll never know what will happen next.
