  1. The book “Johnny Got His Gun” is a pretty sad story about a guy named Joe. The book is mostly about a guy who has suffered many injuries caused by the war he was in. He had a girlfriend and at some point in the book, he mentioned wanting to hug her but he couldn't because he had no arms. Later on he goes in depth about his injuries and says how he doesn't have a nose, mouth, tongue, eyes or the fact that he is deaf. He was also daydreaming about him drowning and not being able to come out of the water because he had no legs to push him up, nor arms. In the book, the author mentions that Joe would never be able to walk with his legs on the ground again. He would never run, jump, or stretch out when he would get tired. He would never get tired again. While daydreaming he wishes he would die and get rid of all this suffering he was going through. The reader has to really analyze the way Joe thinks in order to understand how much suffering the character has experienced. After reading 80 pages of the book, I finally got the idea that he was telling this story while lying on a hospital bed. Honestly I don't want to know what the final of this book will be.

    1. I agree that this book is very vague. I think it really makes the reader think about what is going on to understand what is going on. I also have no idea where the story will go from there.

    3. This is an extremely sad book to me I feel really bad for Joe. I feel bad for him when he dreams all those terrible things that happen to him. you really do need to keep good attention to understand what goes on.

  2. What I like about my book is that Joe is a good guy, he likes to help others and put himself after them. Its interesting that hes still alive even though hes just a stump laying at a hospital. I'm confused on where he works and who some of the girls he talks about are. And I also want to know if any of his family member ever visit him. I don't want to discuss anything right now.I don't have any questions.

    1. I also didn't believe that he was still alive after all that he lost. As he tells the story he doesn't work anywhere because he can barely move. I believe all of the other stories are his life before his injuries.

  3. "Johnny Got His Gun" is a very interesting book. I think it sets it apart from all other books because I haven't read a book written like this. It is the kind of book that leaves the reader hanging, and making them want to read more. It leads the reader thinking that Joe is an average army soldier, when in reality he is telling the story of how he was before his life altering injuries. Gee also tells stories that the reader doesn't quite understand what is going on, when it took place, or who the people are in the story he is telling. So far, I like the book, and it is making me want to read more. Hopefully the author will answer some questions I have about the book the more I read the book. In my opinion, this book actually shows some real world problems veterans face after the war. I doubt the injuries they face are even close to what Joe in the book is going through. I still believe that they are all types of injuries that they have to suffer, except that Joe is suffering through all of them at the same time. I hope that the author will reveal how he got those injuries if Joe even remembers how its happened.

"They would talk about bicycles and girls and dogs and guns. They would talk about camping trips and rabbit hunting and girls and fishing."
This certain quote shows that Joe had a normal life just like everyone else. He did things normal guys would just like everyone else before his life changing injuries. I like the quote because it shows how he lived a normal life and what he did, instead of just thinking of killing himself because he has no arms, legs, eyes, or no hearing or mouth. This quote is important for the same reason. Instead of him reminding himself and the reader of his condition, he rejoices his good times in his life. This also reminds the reader that he isn't just a stump, laying there to rot away and die as time goes by. This quote does not show wether the book is challenged or banned, it is just a simple reminder for the reader on how Joe use to be before the war. I can make connection to this quote because sometimes me and my friends reminisce on things we did when we were younger before, when we all had time on our hands to do whatever we felt like. I still wonder why so much of the book is him saying how he is trying to kill himself, or repeats on how he can't do something. Sometimes there are parts where consecutive sentences are about the same exact thing.

“What’s noble about being an idiot? What’s noble about being blind and deaf and dumb? What’s noble about being dead? Because when you’re dead mister it’s all over. It’s the end. You’re dead and you died for nothing. You’re dead mister. Dead. ”

I chose this quote because Joe got to the point where fighting for a country’s well-being is pointless, and even worthless. I like it because for some reason his words have a lot of meaning to them. It gives the reader the idea of what war actually is. It is important to me because he’s actually right. What’s noble about being unable to do anything with your life anymore even though you fought for the country you represent? He’s now laying on a hospital bed with no hope for the future. He’s got nothing but a brain left. I’m not sure if the quote I chose is the reason for this book being banned. It could be, because his book has a lot of emotion going on in his life, and this specific quote describes them perfectly. The book “Johnny Got His Gun” doesn’t really make a connection between what he’s going through and my life. He’s in a completely different level from where I am.

“Johnny Got His Gun,” by Dalton Trumbo is a interesting book about a war veterans life. It is about his life post-war, and how he lives most of his days while suffering his injuries that he got during the war.
I liked when the stories Joe told were in present time. He told them as if he was doing those exact things at the same moments, before he revealed his current condition on his injuries. One thing I disliked about the book was that Joe told a lot of stories in past tense. He told stories that happened to him a long time ago, before switching back and forth from present stories to past stories.
I don’t like the style of this book. I don’t like it because throughout the book, the author writes very vaguely. He does this most in the beginning of the book, and it makes the reader wonder about a lot of simple things that a lot of other books give to the reader to understand the story better.
My first impression on the book was that I did not understand a single thing that was going on. It made me wonder, and ask many questions that I could not find the answer to unless I read father in the book. The more I started reading the book, the questions I was asking were beginning to get answered, and I was getting a clear idea of what was going on and everything that happened.
I would not recommend this book to other readers who don’t like to be left on the edge of their seat asking questions throughout the whole book. This book is very vague, and makes the reader always want to ask more questions on what is going on, or who a certain character is. I don’t believe the book has enough of a good hook at the beginning to keep the reader entertained. The vagueness in the beginning will turn readers away from the book, because they will be confused.

In the book “Johnny Got His Gun” the main characters name is Joe. He is talking about being in the war and how he was injured by the war. It is a very sad book. He talks about his girlfriend and how he wants to hug her but he can’t because he doesn’t have any arms. He seems very distraught, and he kind of seems like he is very upset. It makes me actually think about what happened in the war. It makes me take a step back and actually makes me want to research about the war more now. I was never very interested in the war and everything, so now that I read this it makes me realize how bad it really was. This book was pretty good. I actually liked it. In the beginning I felt like it was too slow and it drug on. The more I read the better it got. Some parts were confusing but overall, this book was very good!

    1. I think this is a very sad book too. Even in the beginning it was sad and that doesn't really happen. I am to still confused on some of the things I read because he jumps around a lot to different times. I also have more interest in the war.

I think it is acceptable to ban books in school. I think they should be banned according to the kids in the certain grades their in. I think some books should be banned from elementary and middle school, but should not be banned in high school. I believe that each school has the right to ban books that they think are bad for the students’ ages.’
When a book is banned from a school, I think that if a student really wants to read that book that they should go to the local library where books aren’t banned there and they can find any book they would like to read. If someone wanted to ban a book at Centennial, they should at least first be challenged, and see if the book is actually inappropriate for high school aged people. If it is then I do believe it should be banned, but if not, they have no reason to ban the book from the library.
There are times for censorship. I think censorship should exist in public. This is because people might not want to read/hear/see certain things, but will be forced to no matter what.
The book that I was reading was banned because it is very explicit with its language and constantly uses curse words. There are also some sexually explicit scenes, which I think that is the reason that the book got banned from the library of high schools.

“You’re alive and you don’t hut and that’s much better that being alive and hurting.” I choose this quote because even though Joe didn't have any arms, legs or face he was still lucky to be alive. I like this quote because some people that lose an arm or leg bleed to death but Joe that has nothing but his body is still alive. This is important because people who read this book realize how they’re even luckier to be alive and have all there body parts. I don’t think this sentence tells you why this book was banned but it kind of gives you a clue that it talks about not having body parts and some people might say that’s graphic. It shows that even though you’re not in the perfect condition and you’re still alive then it doesn't really matter if you’re not in the perfect condition or not. I can make a connection to this because my mom once told me that we should be lucky that we still have body parts and that were healthy and alive.

“Johnny Got His Gun” is an anti-war novel written in 1938 by American novelist and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and published September 1939 by J. B. Lippincott. The novel won one of the early National Book Awards: the Most Original Book of 1939. Joe Bonham, a young soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell. He gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face (including his eyes, ears, teeth, and tongue), but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body. I was expecting a normal war story to happen, but after reading half of the book, I realized I’ve never read anything like this in my whole life. The book thrilled me a little because this guy goes through so many things, yet he’s still alive. I personally didn’t like the book because it is too sad to even read. The book does actually have a few good things about it. I like how he remembers his childhood so clearly; the times when he went camping with his dad and friends and always had such good times. I also like how, even though they were poor, his parents always made sure to have food in their home for their children to eat. I would recommend this book only to people who love war books, in other words sad books. If you don’t like war books, then don’t even take the time to read it, unless the summary above seemed interesting to you and you’d like to find out what happens to him.

    1. I was also expecting a normal story about a veteran, maybe during the war, but not something like this. The one thing I dont like about the book, is that most stories he tells are all of his past when he was younger. It was all about remembering things, and very little about the present, even though I understand nothing much can happen in the present with his condition. All he had was his mind.

The book “Johnny got his gun” is about a guy named Joe that goes to the war and he talks about what happened to him during the war and about his emotions towards a girl he likes. He also talks about where he worked and who he worked with and how they got along with each other. When he talks about how he was at work and with his friends he acts as if he was there at the moment but he’s just laying on a hospital bed. At first when I was reading this book I got confused a lot and I didn’t really like it. As I got a bit farther into the book it started to make more sense to me and then I actually started to make a bit more sense. This book made me feel bad for the people at war because a lot of them go through these sad things and people don’t really realize it because we don’t think much about the war. I think this was actually a pretty good book but its good when you understand what he’s saying or talking about. I would recommend this book to people who like things about the war and also to the people who are good readers so that they know what the character is talking about because it can get very confusing. The author of this book is Dalton Trumbo and he’s been writing some good books that have been award winning and this book is one of the books that got an award because it was his most highly acclaimed work.

From my point of view, certain books should be banned. The grammar in some books is really bad, and other times too much cussing is going on in the book. I think high school books are fine, as long as the student is okay with the book he’s reading, High school usually has all kinds of books to read, and I guess students got used to the book they are assigned to read. I don’t really have an idea of what middle school students read, but they should be given appropriate books to read. Elementary and middle schools shouldn’t make students read violent, sex related books. I feel like they are too young to know about war, cussing and sexual things. The book my circle and I read is all about war and the causes of it. The book “Johnny got his gun” doesn’t really give a reason to be banned, but a minor reason of banning it could be the language they use. In some scenes the language is totally disturbing, because if you are someone who doesn’t use bad language, the book makes you say the words in your mind and realize you have actually used them.

Johnny got his gun in my point of view is a good book, I do not think that it should be banned. It is a very informational thing and it is a good learning book. I do believe that this book should be an assignment for middle school or high school kids, it a good book. It is sad and talks about the war in real times. Yes, the grammar is bad, but that is part of reading it. This book is definitely a good book to learn about war, and what its really like. I really liked this book. The sexual content and cussing is also part of the learning experience, and I am pretty sure that by middle school most kids have read books that cuss or have sexual content. Middle school and or high school students are mature enough to read this book. So I think this book should no be banned.
